Vuelta a España 2024

Stage 9 of the 2024 Vuelta de Espana takes place in our backyard and is one of the most challenging routes in recent memory. Starting on the coast in Motril, the peloton heads towards the Sierra Nevada and will reach the mountains after 80 kilometers, and then the fireworks will commence. The peloton will first climb the Alto de Purche, which tops at 1.498 meters after 9.1 kilometers of climbing with an average gradient of 7.6%.

This is just the warmup, mind you!

They then descend to the Rio Genil, climb to Güéjar Sierra, and begin the beast, the Alto de Hazallanas, 7.3 kilometers at an average gradient of 9.8%! Many switchbacks are over 20%; the peloton then flies back down to the Rio Genil, where they previously passed through, and then experience Hazallanas a second time. After all that climbing, they finally enjoy the 23-kilometer descent into Granada for the stage finish. Any of our masochistic guests who like a challenge can climb Alto de Purche and/or the Alto de Hazallanas on high mountains Tuesday!
